The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has disclosed that the home-grown school feeding programme of the federal government would commence in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in January, 2019.

Speaking at the 12th Education Secretariat Media Luncheon, in Abuja, yesterday, the secretary for Education Secretariat, Dr Bala Mohamed

Liman, stated that over 120,000 pupils from primary one to primary three, from 626 public primary schools in FCT would be fed daily, under the programme.

Liman added that food vendors have already been screened in preparation for the take-off of the programme in the various schools.

He hinted that the relocation of the FCT College of Education, Zuba, to its permanent site, would commence in phases in 2019, to encourage speedy completion and use of the infrastructure in the new site.

The secretary stated that the college, whose courses have always received 100 per cent NCCE accreditation, would begin to run its Bachelor of Education (B Ed) programme at the next academic session, in affiliation with the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.

Liman noted that in order to keep up with the ever-increasing enrolment figures in FCT schools, the secretariat would need to establish about 20 basic education schools, every year for the foreseeable future.

“As I said earlier, many of the challenges we face relate to funding and there is an urgent need for sustainable funding for the sector. On our part, we are closely studying several options and proposals to best tackle this challenge and our recommended solutions will be made public in due course.”
