Former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday, urged Nigerians to come together to fight the current insecurity challenges and insensitivity bedeviling the country.
He made the remarks while delivering a speech at the 80th Anniversary of Prof Ango Abdullahi, former vice chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria held at his farm, Basawa, Zaria, yesterday.
Obasanjo, said the call became imperative in view of the incessant insecurity that is currently bedeviling the country.
According to him, if people of their age could allow things to go the way they are going, then they are planting the seed of destruction for the country.
“Nobody should feel that he has the monopoly of violence and if it is violence, when you are pushed to the wall, well they say a man dies only once.
“But is it violence that will make this country what it should be? Is it insecurity? I heard that couples were preparing themselves for marriage, and they were abducted here in Nigeria.
Obasanjo further said: “For as long as our nation is not what it should be, then you, our children, the youth and we, your parents, no matter our ages, have to work together to make our country what it should be.
“Nobody can say yes, it is my country, I can do whatever I like with it, God will not allow that to happen.”
Meanwhile, the celebrant and the former vice chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, prof Ango Abdullahi, recalled that his relationship with Obasanjo started in 1975 when the regime of late Gen Murtala Mohammed kicked them out of office while he was a commissioner in Kaduna State under Gen Yakubu Gowon’s administration.
The former VC stressed that the future of Nigeria “is” not in Naira and Kobo but in the legacies left behind, advising the young ones to do everything possible to leave a legacy.
