Today, without mincing words, Kebbi is traversing the face of history, creating a template of wealth creation and leaving a legacy that posterity will smile on kindly and be proud of in every epoch. In fact, prior to the emergence of Governor Bagudu in the keenly contested gubernatorial election of 2015, Kebbi State was at the very bottom of progress with every parameter for measuring development not favouring it even for a bit. The people; the greatest asset of Kebbi State were lost in the wilderness of poverty, lack of opportunities, education, security and even faith.
In his determination of salvaging the people of his state and ramping up his wit and stealth, Governor Atiku Bagudu banished the ghost of the choking debt and poverty holding Kebbi to ransom and set to work. A man of vision they say can see through the cover of darkness, such was the vision of Governor Bagudu when he quickly embraced the federal government’s self sufficiency in rice production initiative; kickstarting a revolution that has today become the darling of president Muhammadu Buhari’s stewardship of Nigeria. Needless to say, the partnership entered into with Lagos State and other critical stakeholders has been responsible for the continuous crash of the prices of rice in Nigeria as we race towards 2019.
But, because it is the law that elections must be held periodically, I am sure not just the people of Kebbi but Nigerians would have preferred that the state be respectfully left under the capable hands of the man who is poised to end hunger in every Nigerian home but alas, to the polls we must go so, as we approach 2019, I have taken it upon myself to tell Nigerians that the unequalled performances of our amiable governor of Kebbi in all critical sectors of governance is almost a guarantee that they will continue to enjoy more rice as the people have been motivated and positioned to do more.
Let’s take education for instance. And before Governor Bagudu came to power, schools in the state were in a total state of neglect, decaying infrastructure, lack of teachers and the absence of learning materials signposted every public school in Kebbi. And due his passion and commitment for that sector, the first state-wide tour that the governor undertook was to access the level of rot in the educational sector. After the tour, an emotional Governor Bagudu declared that it is almost criminal what the children of the masses are made to go through in their quest for knowledge. He registered his commitment to revamp the sector in the shortest possible time. Today, even self-appointed critics of his administration agree that Governor Bagudu has done exceptionally well in the area of education.
From a total infrastructural remodelling, to the establishment of more schools to cater for the increasing number of students; to the clearance of the backlog of huge sums owed WAEC that made the body to withhold the result of students of the state thereby preventing them from furthering their education; to the prompt payment of the sums needed to offset the cost of WAEC for students of the state in the last three years or so of his administration and the continuous school fees support and bursary to students of Kebbi state origin studying in tertiary institutions all over Nigeria, Gov. Bagudu is leaving a mark that has never been witnessed in education.
No wonder then, that all the youth and student bodies in the state are singing his praises and why not? The governor is investing in their future and that of the state and is working assiduously to bequeath to them a state they all can be proud of so, there is nothing to do than to support him.
More so, another area that has witnessed a tremendous boost since Governor Bagudu took over is security. Kebbi before now was always in the news owing to incessant clashes between farmers and herders thus creating an atmosphere of fear that kept farmers away from their farms. This contributed in no small measure to heightening the hunger and poverty that kept Kebbians on their knees. There is no need saying that investors avoided Kebbi state like a plaque as a result of the insecurity phenomenon. However, a combination of strategy and improved funding from the government of Governor Bagudu has since positioned Kebbi state as one of the safest place to do business in Nigeria. This can be seen in the number of investors now lining up to join the many that have already established their thriving businesses in Kebbi state. Aside the IGR that these investors are accruing to the state, direct jobs have been added and many Kebbians are beneficiaries with testimonies.
Indeed, the right-thinking people of Kebbi are speaking ahead of the polls that INEC, the umpire will soon declare open thus kickstarting friendly political hostilities in the next couple of months. They are talking about the man who has brought so much to their doorsteps in so short a period of time; they are aware of the hawks circling to truncate their steady progress under the leadership of Governor Bagudu and are poised to resist all entreaties to that effect.
At this juncture, I believe only Governor Bagudu can lose the 2019 election by himself because his people; the many youth whom he has given hope by offsetting their school fees; the farm owners who have been provided with the necessary cover to keep faith with their ancestral occupation and the many children whose education has been revamped etc. will still say no to the old order that the almighty has rescued them from. Never again will the people of Kebbi who have been exposed to true leadership by their hardworking governor settle for anything less. The governor’s return to government house in 2019 has been paved by his stellar performances and only sworn enemies of the state will say otherwise.
