Secretary for Transportation Secretariat in the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Comrade Kayode Opeifa, has disclosed that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) now has a total of 106 functional traffic light junctions.

Briefing newsmen on the activities of his office, Opeifa stated that the administration inherited 71 functional traffic light junctions in 2015 and had increased it to 106.

The secretary noted that with 106 functional traffic light intersections, Abuja now has the highest number of functional traffic light junctions in Nigeria, adding that by March, 2019, the number would hit 200.

“We are also changing the records that the FCT has the highest fatal accidents. This is because we have discovered that most of the accidents occur at the intersections. By January, 2019, we are going to open additional 20 traffic signal light junctions. And by the 2018 procurement, we are looking at an additional 30 traffic light to be procured for the intersections.”

He explained that the administration has embarked on the traffic light projects to save lives, reduce congestion, reduce accidents and to also make officials of the secretariat to be more efficient.

Opeifa also disclosed that the secretariat has equally developed a system to prevent vandalism, just as he appealed to the public and the media to assist in advising the motoring public to obey the signal lights.
