Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun state on Thursday in Osogbo inaugurated a 13-member steering committee on the campaign for exclusive breastfeeding by mothers in the state.
Oyetola said the Committee was inaugurated to strengthen the health sector and instil the culture of exclusive breastfeeding in nursing mothers.
The governor said the initiative would help in reducing infant mortality by 13 per cent in the state.
Oyetola said that the initiative was part of the government’s commitment to fully actualise its dream of delivering sustainable development in the health sector.
The governor charged members of the Committee to put all machineries in place to make the state a reference point in breastfeeding in the country.
He said that his administration had resolved to prioritise maternal and child healthcare as a response to the growing concern about maternal and infant mortality rate in the country.
”Exclusive breastfeeding is a core component of maternal and child healthcare.
“Indeed, it is the foundation for nurturing healthy, strong and mentally alert children,” Oyetola said.
In her response, the wife of the governor, Mrs Kafayat Oyetola, who is the head of the Committee, promised to take the campaign to every part of the state.
She urged people in the state, particularly women, to join hands for the success of the programme. (NAN)
