Lagos Assembly Moves To Extend State Audit Law To LGs



The Lagos State House of Assembly has expressed its resolved to extend the state’s audit law to local government areas in the state to ensure transparency in the disbursement of public funds.

In his address on the amendment bill titled, “A Law to Amend the Lagos State Audit Law” during the public hearing, the Speaker of Lagos House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa said the review became necessary because a government must be transparent at all levels.

Obasa, who was represented at the event by Majority Leader, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade said that government needed to generate revenue to serve the people and that government’s money must be spent for the purposes it is meant for.

The Audit Department is very important and we must continue to make it functional and effective. The central internal audit is domiciled in Public Finance Management Law,” he declared. According to him, “The Bill seeks to amend 23 Sections of the law, take it to Audit Service Commission and bring all the auditors under one umbrella to exclude the control of Central Internal Audit from the Ministry of Finance”. He stated that the review is also aimed at extending application of the audit law to local government audit commission.

in his welcome address, Chairman, House Committee on Public Accounts, Hon. Moshood Oshun said that the amendment was necessary adding that auditors, serve as checks and balances of the state’s budget.

Oshun promised that the House would do its best and do the utmost for the auditors so that the tax payers would have confidence in the government.

“We must all contribute objectively to make the bill a better one. You can give us a memo to have a bill that we all can be proud of,” he said.

Also speaking Mrs. Joko Ogundimu from the Lagos State Audit Service Commission, said that the main function of the Audit Service Commission is human resource management of auditors and that the government must recruit people with experience in human resource  management.
