Gabon Gives New Date For Oil Block Bids Deadline

Gabon’s government has given oil companies until the end of September to submit bids for 12 shallow-water and 23 deep-water and ultra-deepwater blocks available in its 12th licensing round.

Edgard Mbina-Kombila, general manager of upstream with Gabon’s Directorate General of Hydrocarbons, told an audience of oil and gas executives in London late last week that the closing date is now 30 September 2019.

When the round – which is being supported by UK-based Spectrum Geo – was launched in Cape Town in November, the bid deadline was the end of April 2019, which was later pushed back to June.

Speaking at the first of the round’s roadshows, Mbina-Kombila said the decision to grant extra time was taken “Because we got feedback from the industry, saying was too short”.

Commenting on suggestions that the round could be adversely impacted by the recent attempted coup in Gabon, he said: “Whatever you have heard, you have to be sure that everything is back to normal.”
