As PDP’s Campaign Team Berth In South-east

EMMANUEL MGBEAHURUIKE, captures the outcome of the presidential rally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Owerri, Imo State.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which bestroded the nation’s political firmament like a colossus between 1999 to 2015 when it lost  power to the All Progressives Congress(APC) has not made any pretence in its efforts to regain power in the forth coming general elections.

The spirited efforts of the umbrella brandishing party to re-launch itself to its previous Olympian height of power came to the fore on Tuesday (22/1/2019) when the party organised a one day South east presidential rally in Owerri the Imo State capital.

As early as 9am, the imposing expansive Dan Anyiam stadium venue of the earth shaking event was filled to capacity with party members and faithful from the five states of the zone including market women, traders school children, artisans, members of the organised private sector and the business community.

Prominent among the political heavyweights that attended were the vice presidential candidate of the party, Peter Obi, the National Chairman of the party, Uche Secondus, the Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki, the deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, the wife of the party’s presidential candidate and of course the party’s governorship candidates from the zone.

Expectedly, for fear of the unknown, heavily armed security personnel were on hand to forestall possible  breakdown of law and order.

The campaign came at a time there were insinuations that most of the party leaders are not committed to the campaign of the party.

The PDP office holders in the region, had expressed angst over the choice of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi as the running mate of Atiku. While Igbo leaders endorsed the Obi choice, the PDP leaders footdragged on the matter.

According to party sources,  the PDP leaders had to make a u-turn to back the candidacy of Obi after they sensed that his candidature was popular in the zone.

However, the Owerri rally was the first platform to check the commitment of the PDP leaders to the party’s presidential campaign.

Abia State governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, decried the deplorable state of affairs of the nation, boasting that the party if returned to power next month would re-fix the nation on the path of prosperity.

“PDP is the winning party and with Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, our roads will be reconstructed and our hospitals will be equipped and there will be a return of qualitative education for our children”.

Adding his voice, Ebonyi state governor, David Umah assured the teaming crowd that the party had now become a formidable indivisible entity without factions.

The Ebonyi state governor advised the electorate to vote massively for Atiku Abubakar who he said has the  magic wand to move the nation forward unlike the APC that has pushed it into an avoidable economic quagmire.

In his own submissions, former Anambra state governor and vice president candidate, Peter Obi gave assurances that a PDP led federal government under Atiku Abubakar would promote commerce and industry for the betterment of the South east who he noted are hard working and enterprising.

He added that “Atiku as a president will do the Igbo good, restructure the nation and promote our business through the establishment of industries”.

He therefore implored the people to get their PVCs, vote for the candidates of  the party  and not to sell their votes to power thirsty politicians who do not mean well for the masses.

In the same vein, the deputy Senate  President Ike Ekweremadu who spoke in tandem with the Enugu Sate governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi accused the APC of dragging the nation backwards through administrative incompetence and inefficiency.

He advised the people to cast their votes for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar who he said had been tested and proved capable to rescue the nation from further degeneration.

The two party chieftains blamed the APC led federal government for the current economic crisis in the nation and gave an assurance that an Atiku presidency would remedy the sad situation.

Addressing the crowd, the Presidential candidate of PDP, former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) controlled federal government, of promoting poverty and misery in the land. He assured that he would create jobs for the unemployed and eradicate poverty in the country if elected.

Atiku who used the occasion to formally present the party’s flags to its governorship candidates in the zone regretted that the nation globally acknowledged as the giant of Africa and the most populous black nation on earth, had of recent joined the inglorious league of nations as the headquarters of poverty, destitution and hunger due to the poverty visions of the APC leadership.

“Today, there is too much hunger, starvation, unemployment, agony and insecurity in the land and our nation had become part of the headquarters of world poverty because the APC federal government has no plan,” he said.

Atiku further explained that the rally was held in Owerri because of the desire of the PDP to regain the state and to remedy the ills perpetrated by the APC in the state, saying “I urge you all to come out on the 16th of next month and vote for me and to protect your votes.

“You should also vote for all PDP candidates in the forthcoming elections and we will make sure that the APC which is notorious for rigging, does not have its way this time.”

While assuring all unemployed Nigerians of gainful employment and maximum security if given the mandate to serve, the PDP Presidential flag bearer also accused the APC of destroying the nation’s economy through ineffectual economic policies.

Speaking, the national chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus alleged

that the PDP had uncovered plots by the APC to rig the election but vowed that the PDP would do everything humanly possible to resist this.

He advised the electorate to reject the APC and all that it stands for at the polls and to vote massively for the PDP.
