Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will have to wait for the last group match against host Niger to secure qualification to the forthcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland as they were held to a goalless draw by their South African counterparts, yesterday, at the ongoing Africa U-20 Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Niger Republic.
The Nigeria team won their first game 2-0, while South Africa played a 1-1 draw against host Niger on opening day.
The seven – time champions, Nigeria, dominated the game against Amajita of South Africa but could not find the back of the net at the end of the 90-minutes encounter at the Stade Général Seyni Kountché despite having a total of 13 shots with 66% of ball possession.
In the early stages of the encounter, the Flying Eagles had the first chance at goal in the 5th minute, as Yahaya Nazifi ‘s effort hits the side of the net.
They continued to heap pressure making more incursions into the Amajita’s box but the South African goalkeeper absorbed all the pressure from Maxwell Effiong and Nazifi Yahaya to ensure that they shared the spoils with Paul Aigbogun led side.
The result has blown this group wide open as Nigeria will require a draw against host Niger in the last game on Friday while South Africa will look for an outright victory over Burundi to ensure qualification.
The winners, runners-up, third and fourth place play-off countries from this years’ edition will represent the continent at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland.
