The Flying Eagles of Nigeria will later today, battle host Niger Republic in a make or mar encounter in bid to secure their qualification to the forthcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland and to play in semi-final of the ongoing African Youth Nations Cup in Niamey, Niger Republic
The junior national team, won their first Group A game 2-0 over Burundi and played a goalless draw against South Africa, while Niger shared the spoils in the first two matches against South Africa and Burundi respectively.
Coach Aigbogun and assistants have the benefit of having played the Nigeriens previously. Both teams fought to a scoreless statement at the WAFU Cup Tournament in Lome, Togo in December 2018.
Speaking during a press conference ahead of the clash yesterday, team head coach Paul Aigbogun reiterated that his primary target is the World Cup ticket and they are still determined to pick one of the ticket and also play in the final of the African Youth Championship.
In the same vein, team captain Ikouwem Udoh Utin while reacting to journalists in Niamey reiterated that the team is well prepared and will approach the game with all seriousness.
The captain said the maximum 3 points is all his team will go out for during the encounter.
The seven-time African champions are currently leading Group A with 4 points while Niger and South Africa are in second and third with 2 points as Burundi rock the bottom of the table with 1 point.
A win or draw for Flying Eagles against the Junior Mena qualify the team for the semi-final and automatic qualification for FIFA U20 World Cup in Poland.
The last group game between Nigeria’s U20 national team and their Niger counterparts will take centre stage at the Stade Général Seyni Kountché in Niamey, 4:30pm Nigerian time.
