Understanding Righteousness

I am not trying to say that going to church is not good, but that is not what brings salvation.

Gal. 2:21 “I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the law then Christ died in vain”. You can now see the point I am making. There is no other means of being righteous before God outside Christ Jesus. If there is any other means the death of Christ was useless and good for nothing. If there was any other means where by one can become righteous in the sight of God and God sent His son to come and pass through that agony and shameful death of the cross, His crime would have been worse than that of Adam, glory to God there is no other means.

Matthew 26:39 “He went a little further and fall on His face, and prayed, saying ‘O my father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me, nevertheless, not as I will, but as your will”.

Jesus prayed if there was any other way to save humanity, since there was no other way, he submitted His will to the will of His father to die for the humanity.

Gal. 3:27-28, “where is boosting then? It is excluded by what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the dead of the law”.

No one should boast that he was made righteous as a result of his action, obedience to the law or his excellent behaviour. Righteousness comes only through faith in Christ.

Two types of righteousness

The subject of righteousness is one of the most misunderstood subjects in the body of Christ. Anytime the word righteousness is mentioned what comes to the mind of the people is behaviour or good works, that is the reason we hear believers whom Christ died for and washed with His precious blood calling themselves unrighteous because of ignorance. They have been fed with ignorance. Righteousness has been confused to be good behaviour. They were told to try and be righteous and ever since, they have been trying to be righteous. Their efforts have not been able to bring them to the point they can say that they have attained righteousness. They have not been able to see themselves as righteous based on human standards of righteousness. As a result of all these, spiritual weakness sets in, guilt and condemnation enslaved them. Satan has taken them for a ride. They can no longer pray and expect result. There are constantly looking for a righteous one to pray for them. Because of ignorance of true meaning of righteousness satan accuses them daily, that they are sinners they are not righteous enough and that God won’t answer their prayer.

Knowing that you are righteous, you have a good standing with God, that God has nothing against you is a source of great strength. Satan can’t stand you in the full light of that understanding. This understanding gives you deliverance from the hand of the enemy.

2cor.6:14-16 “be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with belial? Or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel. And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? For ye are the temple of the living God as God hath said I will dwell in them and work in them and I will be their god and they shall be my people”. From the understanding of the above scripture,

God’s perceptions of the believer and the unbeliever can seen as:

  1. The believer is called righteousness, the unbeliever is called unrighteousness
  2. The believer is called light, the unbeliever is called darkness
  3. The believer is called Christ, the unbeliever is called belial
  4. The believer is called believer, the unbeliever is called infidel
  5. The believer is called the temple of God, the unbeliever is called idols

Glory to God, praise to His Holy name, these are whom I am in Christ Jesus, these are the pictures of every child of God irrespective of whom he is. If God calls you righteous that’s who you are. He knows you too well and calls you righteous. So don’t call yourself otherwise. Be bold and courageous enough as a believer in Christ to call yourself righteous. He took it to the extreme to call you Christ, the temple of God that God dwells in you, praise God, that is a powerful statement, it calls for celebration, halleluiah.

These two kinds of righteousness are.

Self-righteousness or righteousness by works and the God’s righteousness or righteous by faith. Self effort can’t produce righteousness or make any one righteous in the sight of God Rom. 3:20, “therefore by the deed of the law no flesh will be justified in this sight for by the law is also saves that he knowledge of sin”. Isaiah 64:6. “But we are like an unclean thin, and all our righteousness are like filthy rag.

Any self-effort outside Jesus Christ to please God is seen as a filthy rag before God. We can imagine how hopeless it will be without Christ. Eph. 2:12 calls it hopeless and without God in this world, which means outside Christ Jesus one is without God. Rom. 3:12-22 “But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witness by the law and prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe, for there is no difference”.

The two types of righteousness are revealed in this passage, the righteousness of God and righteousness by the law.

The righteousness of God is available to all and only received by those who believe in Christ Jesus.

Jesus has fulfilled all the law requirements for righteousness Rom. 10:4 “for Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes”. So, everyone who believes in Christ is credited with the righteousness that Jesus has, the believer and Christ Jesus have the same righteousness, Jesus is not more righteous than the believer, because it is the very righteousness of Christ that He imputed to the believer. It is free without cost.

Romans 3:23-24, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus”.

For all have sinned which means everyone is in serious need of righteousness, no one can help himself. Thanks be to God who provided righteousness free of charge.

vs 24 says, ‘being justified freely or being declared righteous freely by His grace’ if God has provided righteousness freely, there won’t be any need to add charges for righteousness  there is no cost attached for receiving righteousness what is required from everyone is to believe that Christ has paid for our sins.

What You Need Is Only To Believe

Rom. 4:5 “But to him who does not work but believes on Him, who justified the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness”. God’s righteousness is for the one who does not labour to make himself righteous, but believers in Christ, His faith in Christ is what makes him righteous.

You might be thinking right now that this can’t involve you that you are so ungodly. If you see yourself as an ungodly it means you are qualified for His righteousness ———— it says who justifies the ungodly, who does He justify? The ungodly.

God is the righteousness of the one who has faith or who believers in Jesus.         Rom. 4:23-24 “says now it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him, but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead”.

Righteousness is imputed or credited to the believer, the same way righteousness was imputed to Abraham, by believing that is by faith in Christ Jesus, there is no difference.

vs 25 “Who was delivered up because of our offenses and was raised because of our justification”. These are what we believe, and put our faith in that Christ Jesus died for our sins, Christ suffered until God’s anger and the demands of justice were fully met and satisfied and righteousness was made available to anyone who will put his faith in Christ Jesus.

…………. Jesus was raised because of our justification or righteousness.

His resurrection is the evidence that God had declared us righteous.

If it can’t be disproved that Christ Jesus is resurrected, then it is an irrevocable fact that all believers stand righteous before God irrespective of what they have done. ‘Who was raised for our righteousness’ Christ was raised because His payment for our sin was enough. No other payment is required for our righteousness we are declared righteous freely.

I know by now a lot of questions will be in your heart, but follow me with an open mind by the time I am through, you will begin to walk in the reality of righteousness which God has made available to the believer in Christ Jesus. Self-righteousness has never produced faith, rather weakness and cowardice.

Rom. 10:3, ‘‘for they being ignorant of God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God’’

Philippians 3:9 “and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith”

You can see it clearly at this point that there are two kinds of righteousness. In Romans 10:3 they were ignorant of God’s righteousness, and wanted to attain righteousness through their own efforts, but they couldn’t.

The point is that, righteousness starts and ends with Christ Jesus. It is not living right. Living right is very good, but it cannot make you good before God what makes one good is his faith in Christ and Christ alone.

This understanding will make one stable in his walk with God. It takes frustration out and makes you relax with God; knowing He is always for you and not against you. He is not looking for your faults.

If Jesus after He was made sin with our sins, was made righteous enough to enter God’s very presence and sat beside Him, you also have become righteous, from the day you made Jesus the Lord of your life. You can boldly walk into God’s presence and expect a warm welcome from your father.
