The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) has identified what it described as unhealthy rivalry in the country’s health sector as a setback to the sector’s development.
It therefore urged President Muhammadu Buhari to resolve the rivalry between the medical laboratory scientists and medical doctors as soon as possible.
This, the association said will help reverse the country’s position in the global health indices.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, the National Publicity Secretary, AMLSN, Dr. Casmir Ifeanyi, stated that the country’s health sector is so backward because of the rivalry. “If the medical doctors and the medical lab scientists are allowed to do what they are licensed to do, then there will be peace and progress in the health sector.
“What we insist to be done is that there is a global standard and that standard is ISO 1589, Nigeria must midstream that standard.
He commended President Buhari for repositioning the health sector, adding that one thing he should not do is to leave power without harmonizing or restoring health sector and to make it a sector where people are allowed to perform their responsibilities without interference.
According to him, the Nigerian health sector is ranked 188 out of 192 countries in the world and also 52 position out of 54 countries in the Africa region. He therefore urged the president to put machinery to resolve the issues.
