Taekwondo Open: Nigeria Emerges Overall Champion



Team Nigeria’s taekwondo have emerged the overall winners of the 2019 Nigeria International Taekwondo Open.

The team bagged a total of 10 medals, comprising 9 gold and one Bronze to be crowned the overall champion. Benin Republic contingent finished second with 2 medals of one gold and one silvers respectively.

Saudi Arabia, Taraba, Lagos and Ligue d’Abobo from Cote D’lvoire all made it to the medal table. 

Recall that the World Taekwondo Federation had given the competition a G1 international ranking.

The heavyweight finals which was decided, yesterday, saw National sports festival silver medallist, Pater Utiku defeated National champion, Henry Nzelu Chukwudi 18-13 in the men’s -80kg to win the gold medal.

While in the  female category, National champion, Elizabeth Ayanacho  powered past former National champion, Judith Usifoh 11-8 in an epic final of the the women’s -62kg to finish on a high note.

Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Olusade Adesola commended Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF) for hosting the champions, while urging other sports federation to make use of the revamped National Stadium to bid for the hosting rights of international competitions.

On her part, president of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF), Margaret E. Binga, lauded the world governing body for giving Nigeria the opportunity to host the  event and also hailed countries who participated at the games.
