A/Ibom Govt Moves Against Indiscriminate Waste Disposal

The Akwa Ibom state government has launched a war on indiscriminate disposal of waste with a stern warning that anyone caught violating the state’s environmental laws would be prosecuted.

The state’s chairman of Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency, Prince Akpan Ekim, made the threat against the backdrop of the worsening environmental situation where residents dumped wastes at illegal spots and sabotaged the ongoing efforts to keep the state clean.

In an interactive session with newsmen in Uyo yesterday, Ekim said that since he assumed office he had strived hard to put the agency on the right part by embarking on a holistic rebranding programme to enable it meet its core mandate.

Ekim alleged that some individuals were plotting to foment trouble by deliberately dumping refuse at illegal places within the Uyo metropolis to sabotage the efforts of the state government and eventually carry out street protest against the agency.

The plot, according to him, includes the implanting of destitute at strategic locations and dump points to indiscriminately litter the Uyo and portray the state as being dirty.

He said: “Since the state was adjudged the most cleanest city in the country by both national and international bodies, we intend to maintain the standard, but it is most unfortunate that soon after black spots and illegal dumpsites were cleared, some residents who we believe are saboteurs would return and dump wastes on the same spots.’’

He admonished unregistered refuse collectors to regularise their registration with the agency or face the full weight of the law as the outfit remains the only body authorised by law to engage in refuse collection.
