In commemoration of the World Cancer Day, the Medicaid Cancer Foundation (MCF), has donated N10m to cancer patients in the country.
Presenting the cheque in Abuja, wife of Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Zainab Bagudu, who is also the founder, MCF, said, “On this day of world cancer day, we are encouraged to do things that will create awareness to the general population and help people with cancer cases.
“We have pick twenty people for the first group of N10m. It doesn’t sound like a lot, but we need to do something to reduce the problem of cancer.”
According to her, “what we are experiencing now is early detection, we found out that in low middle income countries like Nigeria, early detection will reduce the challenge.
In his address, the minister of Health, Professor, Isaac Adewole, identified late detection as the major cause of cancer related deaths in the country.
According to him, “40per cent of cancers can be prevented , 40 per cent can be detected early and cured, and 20per cent will require palliative care but the problem in Nigeria is that 80 per cent of our cancers come late and 80 per cent die within 5 years .
“But we can change this terrible narrative about cancer in Nigeria. That is why it is important so that we don’t lose ten people to cancer every hour in the country.
“It is estimated that ten people die from cancer every hour in Nigeria. And we can prevent this by working together, stopping smoking , stopping or slightly reducing alcohol intake, changing our lifestyle , don’t over expose yourself to sunlight ; by eating well , exercising enough and getting preventive vaccine for some of the cancers , we can virtually do way with cancer.”
The minister congratulated Dr Zainab Bagudu for securing a position in the Union for International Cancer Control’s (UICC) board while also congratulating Governor Atiku Bagudu for being the number one governor cancer advocate in Nigeria.
