Former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has said that Uyo, the state capital has remained the way he left it in 2015.
He alleged that not even one kilometre of tarred road had been constructed in Uyo since 2015 when Udom Emmanuel took over as governor of the oil-rich state. Senator Akpabio said the state had been on the backward slide instead of moving forward in infrastructural development and welfare for the citizenry since he left office.
According to him, “except for the eight years of Governor Godswill Akpabio administration from 1999 when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been in power, we didn’t see any legacy. We didn’t see anything we could point that was done by the PDP.”
He continued: “Many projects have been abandoned. Even the Tropicana with the shopping mall has been abandoned. Hilton Hotel with all the furnishing has been abandoned. In all public functions, they close down schools and bring out school children in the rain and in the sun and will be shouting as if they have a crowd.”
Akpabio spoke when the board of trustees, executives and members of the Akwa Ibom Community Association in the 19 Northern States and Abuja, met to endorse the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Akwa Ibom State, Nsima Ekere, on Sunday in Abuja.
At the event, Ekere assured the people of the state that he would run an all-inclusive when he is elected into office.
He told the people that he had evolved a sustainable development plan on participatory economic growth, which includes a N20 billion fund for strategic enterprise development.
Ekere said that it was foolhardy to rely on outsiders to develop the state, adding that when experienced indigenes are mobilised, adequately empowered and creatively involved, development would not only come faster, but would be more sustainable.
A former president of the community, Mr. Ben Ukpong, lamented what he described as total failure of the Udom administration to give the state a facelift since he came into office.
Attempts by the special assistant on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Enang, to curry support for his principal drew outright rebuttal from the audience who booed him.
Enang said: “We are urging you to come home on 16th February and vote for President Muhammadu Buhari.”
His appeal was greeted with “No! No!! No!!!” The more he tried to calm the crowd, the louder their voices resonated.
Earlier in his presentation, the community’s president, Comrade Tom Etim Okon, extolled the qualities of Ekere and pledged to support his candidature.
