The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) has described the postponement of the 2019 Presidential and House of Assembly elections as an attack on the trust of Nigerians.
In a statement issued by the Executive Director, Centre for Citizens with Disabilities, David O. Anyaele said they received the news of the postponement with total shock and frustration.
In his words “We received the news of the postponement of the 2019 General Elections to February 23, 2019 for Presidential and National Assembly and March 9, 2019 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with total shock and frustration.
“This is an attack on the trust of Nigerians on INEC and a question mark on the independence of INEC. This is because less than 24hours to the elections, INEC through its officials had confirmed the readiness of the Commission to hold the elections as already planned which informed stakeholders’ preparation for the elections’
He said “Recognizing that our organisation, the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) is accredited to observe the elections, we had recruited, trained and deploy persons with disabilities in seven States and Abuja FCT as election observers, the news of postponement is a huge setback and demoralizing”
Appreciating that we have spent so much in conducting voter education and sensitization of persons with disabilities to come out to cast their vote, this postponement will contribute in no small measure to low voter turnout on the new date.
“We call on INEC to explain to Nigerians what really led to the postponement of the elections and planned steps to address the situations”
The CDD further called on Nigerians, in particular persons with disabilities and their families, to be strong, courageous and resolute in their interest to participate in the general elections and elect leaders of their choice come next week Saturday.
