When we talk about drug abuse, we are simply talking about the different ways in which people abuse or misuse drugs. We could see drug abuse as the recurrent use of illegal drugs or the misuse of prescription. Drug abuse can further be explained as the use of chemical substances that lead to an inability to control the use of such substances.
There are different ways in which people abuse drugs. These can be sub-divided into two categories; the legal drug abuse which often occurs with prescription that individuals take from their physicians, and the illegal drug abuse separated into three categories; stimulants, sedatives and narcotics.
Individuals who abuse drugs build up a tolerance to the effects, causing addiction and as they become addicted to such drugs, their health worsens. Physical risk to health include heart problem, HIV/AIDS, damage to the lungs and seizures. Possible psychological consequences include anxiety, poor judgment, impaired memory and even psychosis. It can also create a much higher risk of death.
Addiction to drugs often lead to serious difficulties in social relationships. Family members and friends are affected by the health and legal consequences of drug abuse brought on by the addicted individuals with divorce, loss of child custody and destroyed friendship being just a few of the negative possible outcomes.
Many drugs such as cocaine, heroin and various forms of amphetamine, affects the central nervous system and can alter a users consciousness. Most illegal drugs have adverse cardiovascular effects, ranging from abnormal heart rates to heart attacks.
Chronic use of some drugs can lead to both short-term and long-term changes in the brain, which can lead to mental health issues including paranoia, depression, anxiety, aggressions, hallucinations and other related problems.
Further more, drug abuse can cause divorce among couples. The wife or husband may be affected by the health and legal consequences of drug abuse brought on by the addicted spouse. This can cause distance between the couples and can be further extended to cause divorce. Divorce can cause psychological problems for everyone involved, especially the children.
Rape is an effect of drug abuse. Consumption of hard drugs like Cocaine, or Marijuana can obstruct the functions of the brain thereby making such individual to act abnormally and misbehave. Such misbehaviors may include one running around naked, rape, abnormal dances and abnormality in ways of talking. One may be raped or rape someone because of the adverse effects of this drugs on the brain.
Death is another effect of drug abuse. For instance, if one takes an over, or under-dose of prescribed drugs it can cause death because it is wrong for the body system. Misuse of drugs can cause the malfunctioning of the internal organs of one’s system. It is no more news that many people have died as a result of misuse of drugs. Some have had dangerous diseases, which affect the liver, lungs, kidneys, intestine and other internal organs and can lead to their death.
In conclusion, there should be proper enlightenment on the use of drugs to avoid reoccurrence and unnecessary loss of lives.
Similarly both government and civil society members especially those concerned with advocacy on drug abuse should intensify their activities more than is being done presently.
