They were the rave in the music industry what it was. When they were on stage, fans were ecstatic, clamouring for more. But were they able to keep up the tempo they started off with? ANTHONY ADA ABRAHAM takes a look at some Nigerian artistes who are missing in action.
Nobody could contest with the lyrical prowess of some of these Nigerian artistes. The energy they bring to the game was second to none. When rendering a punchline, the feel could be felt from the beat as the rhythm took one to the crescendo.
One of the artistes missing in action of late is Chidimma Ekile, well known for her electric performances and popularity when with her label boss iLLBliss and in-house engineer Tha Suspect. But after her divorce from them, the “Kedike” crooner has been finding it difficult to find her feet. Though she has been posting photographs on her social media handle, it is hard to tell if she can really enjoy her past fame and glory.
Also for Iyanya, not too long ago, this artiste was one of the biggest things in the Nigerian music industry. After winning the popular MTN Project Fame competition in 2008. Iyanya’s career was elevated above the roofs and was further more elevated above the skies with his then hit song titled “Kukere”. The Kukere song was everywhere, radios, clubs, parties and even in some governmental dinners (When GEJ was president). Iyanya’s career seemed like it would never get to a point where it would crash like a computer system. His current status in the Nigerian musical industry surprises everyone. He left his former label and signed up with Don Jazzy’s Mavin Record. His career is already shaky even with his collaboration with Mavin Crew. Just recently, Iyanya refused to take a back seat on the issue between himself and Ubi Franklin concerning their time as partners in Triple MG where the Kukere singer, Iyanya, revealed that Ubi betrayed him by omitting his name from their partnership contract.
Iyanya said it was Ubi’s greed that promoted his separation from the label, but the question fans are asking is if that has been responsible for none performance in the industry.
Enters Niyola. The talented R&B singer has been a bit too quiet all year leaving people with the impression that she is on a hiatus.
Waje seems to be more business inclined now, looking at her marriage to Omawumi with the new company they just started off. She is a vocal powerhouse any day but she’s been particularly quiet musically. We hope she comes out soon with a banger.
Our own Cynthia Ikponmwenosa Morgan, the Nigerian female dancehall act became prominent in 2013, shortly after signing unto Northside Entertainment Inc. Her debut singles under the music imprint drew attention to the fact that she is indeed very talented. The big break for Cynthia Morgan was after the release of her 2015 single ‘German Juice’. She was tipped by several industry pundits to get into the realms of Tiwa Savage in no time. Cynthia Morgan was among the five nominees for the 2015 Headies Awards ‘Next Rated’ act. A few years after the ‘red headed’ and fierce looking singer seems to have fizzled out. She has been missing in action for a while no new songs no social media activities.
Dr SID has been riding on the fame of “Surulere” from 2014 and the less dominant hit song “Kabiyesi” in 2015, the Mavin star hasn’t been up to much in 2016 and this leaves us with a disquieting calmness.
Enters W4, one of the biggest talents in the industry. Someone needs to check W4’s address and be sure all is well with the young man as well as if he still remembers what it means to be a musician.
Another artiste that needs to sit up and take his music more seriously than he’s currently is D Prince. Because in the end, Don Jazzy will not save him and for all the producer’s greatness, Prince will be appraised on his own regardless of any blood ties. Think of the Mavin team fading away, that should shed more light that D Prince is lagging behind.
Also, D’Banj’s brother K-Switch needs to get back into the studio and make music. He shouldn’t be basking the euphoria of his brother is also is somewhat not dropping great hits like when in Mohits Records with Don’t Jazzy. He needs to make and release and push his music.
For 9ice, Abolore Adegbola Akande, who came into limelight with his song titled ‘Gongo Aso’ who thought he would be out of the radar. The track was like the biggest thing then across the country, especially in Lagos and the South West but nothing is happening today. He needs to drop a stronger punchline or he would continue to be nowhere.
General Pype is yet another very talented artiste who has been submerged by the dynamic trends and stiff competition in the music industry. The talented dancehall singer is a rare breed of artistic sophistry. However, the dreadlocks-wearing singer has not been able to stay relevant in the industry Patoranking came on board. After a hit or two, Pype has not been able to stay afloat the murky waters of entertainment in Nigeria. The biggest news about him was in 2016 when it was rumoured he sold his song ‘Gbagbe Oshi’ to Davido which became the lead single of the “Son of Mercy” EP.
These Nigerian artistes are only few out of the many who are missing in action and are finding it difficult to either make that comeback of stay afloat.
