INEC Proceeds With Collation In Bauchi’s LG

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced collation of the gubernatorial election results in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State few hours after court pronouncement.

Governor Mohammed Abubakar and the state chapter of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bauchi State had secured a court injunction restraining INEC from proceeding with the collation process in Tafawa Balewa LGA but the electoral umpire, after obeying the court order, asked the court to set aside the pronouncement on the ground that it lacks the jurisdiction.

But ruling on the matter today, Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court Abuja vacate order stopping INEC from collating Tafawa Balewa LGA election results.

INEC had after the March 9 governorship elections in 29 states of the federation declared the polls in six states as inconclusive as violence disrupted the process.

While elections were held in Kano, Benue, Plateau and Sokoto last Saturday, the full process was hindered in Bauchi and Adamawa states as a result of court cases.

Voters in Tafawa Balewa had to wait for the court to determine the case filed against the collation of results by Governor Abubakar Bagudu and the state chapter and APC.
But after the court ruling, INEC immediately resumed collation in the Tafawa Balewa LGA at 4pm today.

“The Commission will thereafter proceed with State Collation of Results and hopefully make a declaration and return,” INEC National Commissioner and chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Barr Festus Okoye told LEADERSHIP.
“The Collation Officer for Tafawa Balewa Local Government and the Returning Officer for Governorship election are in Bauchi,” Okoye added.
