Amina Yerima Gadzama is the chief executive officer of Sixteeno3 event planning and PurpleTAG in Kaduna. In this interview with Fatima Shua’ib, she shares some of her accomplishments.
Why are you inclined to entrepreneurship?
I chose being an entrepreneur because I love to live by my own terms, I also have so many ideas on things to do in becoming a successful entrepreneur it always just felt like a mandatory line to follow right from when I was little. It is the best way to self-sufficiency and financial freedom. The 8-5 for me does not permit so much freedoms and opportunities, it is like being stuck in the same place five times a week, it could really get boring for a spontaneous person like me.
Where are you from?
I am from Borno State, my business is based in Kaduna
Do you think today’s woman is where she ought to be?
The role of women has skyrocketed a lot in today’s society , you see women in top key positions in federal government offices, banking sector , politics and lots more being the decision makers and it brings joy to me that majority of the society is accepting this because by educating a woman you educated a whole Nation. I have watched lots of women make wonders, starting from my Mother, she is my number one fan and I have no doubt in all women across the world.
What are some of the challenges you have faced so far?
The challenges’ are enormous especially being that I run two businesses in Nigeria. I own a fabric store and I’m also an event planner. It’s honestly has not been easy , but one of the major challenges has to do with shipment and clearing of goods when they come into Nigeria, also transportation of goods to clients within the shores of Nigeria.
What does fashion and style mean to you?
Fashion and style is very key to me, I believe how you dress and display your fashion and style has a lot to say about your personality and that is how you are addressed. For me, I love to keep my day to day simple and I go over the top when I have events.
What genre of music do you listen to and why?
I love old school, Reggae, RnB, Soul, they just never go out of style. They are very classic.
Where in Nigeria is your preferred tourist location?
I love the Yankari National Park, Bauchi State. The serene atmosphere brings you very close to nature
What do you do at your leisure?
When I am not sourcing for fabrics for my business, I try read lots of novels, and I also watch television and I enjoy a lot of sleep.
What makes you stand out?
When I started my business, I decided to look for the gap that others could not fill; it is quite competitive but I believe everyone who goes into the business has some sort of uniqueness as they come. The fact that I combine selling of fabrics and events planning, I tend to meet mists with my customers at the same events I plan, this stands out if you ask me.
What is your advice to young entrepreneurs?
I will advise that they keep pushing and never for one day say you can’t do it. Be proud of who you are and keep hope alive.
