Rabi’a Umar is a resilient and strong female who has taken up her passion turned trade as a way of life. In this interview with Fatima Shua’ib, she highlights ways to succeed.
Has it been passion or business as usual?
Ever since I was a kid, I have had a strong passion for fashion design. As such, I used to find myself sketching and drawing. I made a dress for myself; my mom adored and applauded me. She also advised and encouraged me to go into taking fashion designing beyond passion. Afterwards, I made three different designs and advertised them on my various social media platforms, I got tons of patronage from various sites, people started placing their orders and I was getting paid, that was how a hobby was transformed into business
What are the challenges so far?
Like any other businesses obstacles are inevitable so for me I will say being the sole proprietor of pétillant fleur I have to do almost everything myself which is quite stressful and my customers tend to be so eager to get their clothes but fittings can be time consuming and in fashion design perfection is must do.
From your view, who is today’s woman?
I see today’s woman to be a very strong and powerful being in the society due to the contribution she continues to make, today’s woman is that woman That ensures the stability, progress and long-term development of nations.
What does fashion and style mean to you?
To me fashion and style is a way of life, it has to do with expressing your identity showing someone who you are through your fashion choices and encapsulating who you are on everyday level, and how you project that through your clothes. What we wear is what we are and it’s quite personal
What genre of music are you inclined to?
Country music because they make me envisage things like they are in front of me and take me out of the planet earth.
Where is your favourite tourist site?
Obudu cattle ranch would be my favourite tourist site.
What do you do in your spare time?
I watch fashion shows to help me keep up with the dynamic and ever changing trend in fashion and design
What is your take home for upcoming entrepreneurs?
There are three major ways to become a successful entrepreneur, firstly, know your products more than anyone. Secondly, know your customers. Lastly, always have a burning desire to succeed.

I am from the commercial city, Kano state actually.
