Established by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in April 23, 1995, the day is dedicated to the promotion of reading, publishing and copyright protection in all parts of the globe.
Also known as the World Book and Copyright Day or the International Day of the Book, UNESCO settled for the date as it coincides with the death dates of popular Spanish writer, Miguel de Cervantes, and UK’s iconic and trans-generational playwright and poet, William Shakespeare, who both died on April 23, same date but different years based on the calculations of the Gregorian and the English Julian calendars.
The date also marks the birth date and death of several other prominent authors.
While Nigeria and some other countries of the world celebrate their national World Book Day ahead in March, as in the UK and Ireland where it is celebrated in March as a charity event but as a World Book Night on April 23; in Sweden on April 13 on occasions when it coincides with Easter, while in Maryland USS, celebrated with a street festival, organisations, individuals, libraries and groups are encouraged to participate in the celebration via hosting pockets of activities that promote reading, writing, publishing and copyright improvement.
In commemoration of the event, the Embassy of Spain in Nigeria will host an evening of Yoruba Culture to mark the occasion.
