The minister of state for power, works and housing, Mustapha Baba Shehuri, has said that Nigeria needed at least N3 trillion to build standard roads across the country.
He stated this in Abuja yesterday when he received the leadership and officials of the Igbo World Union (IWU) who were in his office to interact and exchange ideas on prominent issues about the union.
The minister noted that despite the fact that the present administration met a lot of challenges when he assumed the leadership of this country in 2015, that government has been trying to fix the grey areas especially in the area of infrastructure.
According to him, “This country is lagging behind especially in the area of infrastructure and as we are talking now, we need nothing less than N3 trillion to fix the road infrastructure in line with global best practice.
“When we came in 2015, the budget for the whole road sector was N18 billion which cannot construct a 50 killometer road, but in 2016, because President Muhammadu Buhari believes that this country can only develop if we build the right infrastructure, what was appropriated for road alone in 2016 was over N280 billion.”
Responding, the president general of the Igbo leaders, Amb. Mishak Nnata, lamented that many region’s in the country were in dire need of infrastructural development adding that the south- east region suffers from infrastructure deficit.
While canvassing for an egalitarian and civilised Nigeria, he said that the dredging of the River Niger and upgrading of the Onitsha Light port with necessary infrastructures would enable the transformation of the River Benue confluence to a port city in due time.
He pointed out that the dredging would also create more jobs and increase the country’s internally generated revenue (IGR).
