The renewal of the appointment of Mr. Godwin Emefiele as the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) by President Muhammadu Buhari for another term of five years yesterday received a hitch-free consideration in the Senate.
Without any controversy, the Senate handed over Emefiele’s screening to its Committee on Banking and Finance and gave it one week to undertake the task.
On May 8, President Buhari wrote a letter to the Senate requesting its confirmation of Emefiele as CBN governor for a second term of five years following the expiration of his tenure next month.
In the letter, Buhari said: “In view of the expiration of the first tenure of the current governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria on June 2, 2019, and pursuant to the provisions of Section 8 (1) and (2) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007, I hereby present for confirmation by the Senate Mr. Godwin I. Emefiele for re-appointment as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria for a final term of five years.
“It is my hope that the distinguished Senate will consider and confirm the nominee in the usual expeditious manner,” he added.
During plenary yesterday, the Senate commenced legislative work on the president’s request with Senator Ahmed Lawan (APC Yobe North) presenting the executive communication.
Lawan said: “I present the executive communication to the house, that the Senate do consider the request of Mr. President and Commander-in-Chief on the renewal of the appointment of Godwin I. Emefiele as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria in accordance with Section 8(1) and (2) of the CBN Act 2007.”
The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, referred the request to the Senate Committee on Banking and Finance for further legislative action and to report back to the house within one week.
