Protest In Katsina Over Arrest Of Vigilantes, Bandits Siege

Tension enveloped Batsari local government area of Katsina State yesterday as peaceful protest took place in Batsari town following the arrest of some local vigilantes and alleged bandits laid siege on the area.

Recall that some members of vigilante groups in the area are said to have been in the custody of the police in Katsina since last week following the murder of a suspected collaborator with bandits by some vigilantes in the area.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the protest in Batsari was sequel to spike in banditry and kidnapping in the area after the arrest of the members of the vigilante group in Batsari community of Wagini.

An eyewitness said the irate youths condemned what they described as bandits’ siege leading to the invasion of Wagini on Friday and three other villages on Sunday.

According to the source, one person was killed in Wagini and no fewer than three female residents kidnapped while many escaped with injuries as their houses were being looted or set ablaze.

It was also learnt that armed bandits also rustled sheep, cows and goats and other valuable items at Garin Yara, Garin Labo and Quandaso villages on Sunday night.

The spokesman of the Katsina State Police Command, Isah Gambo (SP), confirmed that only two vigilantes from the area were arrested over the killing of a suspected informant to bandits, noting that mere suspicion is not enough for anyone to take the life of another person.

“It is not allowed in the constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria; every Nigerian under the constitution is entitled to right to life,” said Gambo, even as he maintained that the Batsari protest was not related to the wave of banditry in the area.
