2019 Polls: There Were Attempts To Compromise Nigerian Army – GOC

The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division, Major General Jamil Sarham, has said there were attempts by politicians to compromise soldiers of the Division during the just-concluded 2019 general elections.

Sarham disclosed this yesterday in Port Harcourt during the presentation of awards to him by two groups: the ECOWAS Youth Council and the Northern Youth Council of Nigeria.

He said the Nigerian Army garnered news experience during the conduct of the 2019 general election, which it acted in aide of the Nigerian Police and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The GOC said: “The Division has under its Area of Responsibility (AOR) four Niger Delta states of Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers with its Headquarters domiciled in Port Harcourt.

“Operational and administrative activities of the Division commenced in November 2016 while the Division was operationalized on 13 July 2017 in a grand ceremony.

“Part of its mandate is to protect national assets, fight oil theft, kidnapping, sea piracy, cultism, armed robbery and other sundry crimes within its AOR in conjunction with other relevant stakeholders.

“The Division has been satisfactorily executing these responsibilities since its inception.

“However, the 2019 General Elections which the Division acted in aid of the Nigerian Police and INEC offered a unique experience. This is because some subversive elements tried but failed to coerse the Division to compromise the integrity of the polls.

“This is due to the resilience and doggedness of the personnel whom some of them unfortunately paid the supreme price in defence of our democracy.

“Surprisingly, while this was going on, some patriotic citizens were keenly watching and independently verifying our activities.”
