Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita, has expressed concern over the huge amount of funds spent yearly by government on hiring consultants to do jobs that are supposed to be handled by civil servants.

The head of service said this at the weekend during a five-day training programme on Survey Design Data and Reporting organised for members of the project management teams and other relevant officials drawn from across the federal civil service on the implementation of the federal civil service strategy and implementation plan.

While noting that the five-day training programme is aimed at equipping civil servants with innovative ways of gathering and interpreting verifiable data to provide strong administrative report for the service and government at large, she also charged participants who had been selected to drive the technology reforms in the civil service to help government make decisions based on scientifically-verifiable data.

“This is all about capacity building to enable the civil servants to do what they are hired to do and I have been very impressed with the attendance and the commitment of the participants. They have learnt a lot, I believe with all certainty that they will be able to contribute immensely to the development of the federal civil service. I see them being able to collect data, analyse and interpret on their own”.

“As you can see, there is no system in place to gather data that has historical value to present day value. We want to build a crop of civil servants that will not be looked down upon”, she said.
