INEC Reviews 2019 Elections In Sokoto




The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday in Sokoto commenced a total review of the conduct of the 2019 general elections in the state with the aim of improving subsequent elections in the state.

The one-day review according to the INEC national commissioner in charge of the Northwest zone, Mrs Amina Zakeri was aimed at providing the needed environment for retrospection on how the commission has fared in the just concluded general elections.

Speaking before declaring the review meeting open, Amina Zakeri implore participants to be honest in their views and suggestions, adding that, they will be helping the commission to improve subsequently.

“We are not here to glorify ourselves but to tell ourselves the truth. Let’s however note that where we are right, yes, we can praise ourselves and where we got it wrong, we must be ready to accept corrections, and improve to enable us get to where we want to be subsequently,” Amina Zakeri noted.

While buttressing his point before the stakeholders commence deliberations, INEC Facilitator from Abuja, Mr Suleiman Tanko divulged that the review has no limitation hence all aspects of the just concluded elections is to be re-examined for future improvement.

According to him, the intention is to help review not only the operational framework of the elections, but also identify challenges, key issues for improvements as well as advancing recommendations as the review will provide overall platform for knowledge sharing amongst staff.

He also noted that areas of concentration range from the preparatory stage and election stage to the post-election of the just concluded general elections.

Participants at the review meeting include technocrats, activists, legal luminaries, lecturers, political parties as well as all other relevant stakeholders.
