An Abuja-based nongovernmental organisation (NGO), Purple Hands Empowerment Initiative, has commenced tree planting exercise, with the planting of trees of different species, in Igu community in Bwari area council.

LEADERSHIP gathered at the exercise is part of the NGOs tree planting awareness campaign programme, in collaboration with Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) and the FCT Parks and Recreation department.

Speaking during the exercise, founder of the NGO, Max Nduaguibe Brenda, noted the importance of tree planting in any environment, to include the release of more oxygen, as well as removal of bad gasses that could pollute the environment.

Brenda explained that the tree planting campaign programme of the NGO was in line with this year’s World Environmental Day, which aims at protecting the environment from all forms of abuse and depletion.

She stated that the organisation was in the community to create the necessary awareness that would enable women and youths in the area to protect the environment by replanting trees being indiscriminately cut down for fire woods and charcoal.

Also speaking, the district head of Igu community, Tanzako Solomon Igu (JP), described the tree planting awareness campaign programme of the NGO as a welcome development, just as he promised to discourage residents of the area from the culture of indiscriminate cutting of trees for fire wood and charcoal.

Igu noted that the awareness campaign would go a long way to instill in the youths, women and other residents of the community, the culture of tree planting and environmental protection.
