INEC To Conduct Supplementary/Rerun Elections In Sokoto January 25

The Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) said preparations are in top gear to ensure a hitch free supplementary/ rerun elections into 2 National and 2 State House of Assembly seat on the 25th of this month.

Giving reasons for the elections at the Stakeholders Forum meeting held in Dankeni Hotels, Sokoto,  the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Sadiq Abubakar Musa assured that, they will deliver fair and credible election, just as he appealed to stakeholders to play by the rule of the game.

According to Sadiq, the supplementary/ Rerun elections were as a result of Court orders to that effect.  “After the ups and down of 2019 we are back here again. We are here because of the various court judgments, which began from tribunal to Appeal.

We are going to conduct 4 elections. 2 House of Representatives, and 2 State House of Assembly.

Sadiq also noted that the House of Assembly elections that are supplementary would only take place in of Sokoto north 11 and Binji local government. He also added that, the Rerun House of Representative election would take place in Sokoto North, Sokoto South as well as Isa local government.

In his appeal to electorates and stakeholders, Sadiq said, “Election is a very tedious process but we are urging you all as the political class to please play by the rule of the game.

“I do not know anything short of due processes. We are here for everybody not any particular interest. I will never participate in electoral fraud and whatever I do here in this world is between me and my God. Nobody will remain in this world, no matter what you are.

“We will do our best to make sure that we have the best outcome. We are going into serious elections in few days from now and I assure all of you that, we will conduct elections free, fair and accountable elections without fears or favour”.

Speaking on his part, the Commissioner of Police, Sokoto State Command, CP Ibrahim Kaoje said they are confident of having credible elections because the REC has done it before. “He has deliver Sokoto free and fair. We have more than 400 or so PUs that we are going to conduct rerun elections. We want people to come out and vote.

No bandits in Sokoto now. There are no bandits in Isa. Everybody in Sokoto is now safe. We will conduct elections in Isa safely.

On his part, Uchena Eze from the Economic and Fiancial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) said the era of money politics is over as their men will be on the watch for those trying to buy votes.

According to Uchena, vote buying is a criminal offence that must be avoided “No undue advantage for any candidate, as we will be handy to ensure free, fair and acceptable election.

The INEC Head of Election and Party Monitoring, Mukhtar Ibrahim said 39 political parties would participate in the January 25th supplementary/rerun election.
