The minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu has stressed the need for emphasis on science and engineering, noting that allowing our economy to entirely depend on commodities is one problem we have faced.
Onu, a first civilian governor of Abia State, stated this at the Convention of the Izzi High School Abakiliki Old Students Association held at the School of Education, Ishieke Campus, Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki.
“ One problem we faced is that we we have allowed our economy to depend on commodities. First we started with agricultural products and later petroleum products, crude oil and natural gas, without adding anything. You cannot really grow your economy without emphasizing science and engineering”.
The minister, who is an old boy of the school said he was surprised when not even one of the students of the school mentioned engineering as a profession to pursue later in life and urged the principal of the school to bring people that will enlighten the students on the importance of engineering to nation building.
He said it will be very sad if they don’t have anybody among students of Izzi High School aspiring to be an engineer, stressing that he will be happy to see somebody from the school go to the space for Nigeria.
“The timing for the reactivation of this important
Association is very remarkable. Nigeria is celebrating 50 years anniversary of the end of the Civil War.
Just yesterday, at the National Arcade in Abuja, our Federal Capital, during the 2020 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration, I witnessed as President Muhammadu Buhari, along with some other dignitaries laid wreaths in memory of our fallen heroes, most of whom died during the Civil War.
