AGF, Whistle-blower Trade Tackles Over $1bn Fraud

The minister of Justice and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami (SAN) has denied the claim by a whistle-blower, Mr Okpurhe John to have uncovered $1,034,515,000 fraudulently stashed in an account with a bank.
In a statement signed by Malami’s media assistant, Dr. Umar Jibrilu Gwandu, he said that Mr JOkpurhe had alleged that the Nigerian Ports Authority operates an account containing looted funds amounting to the sum of USD $1,034,515,000.000.
According to the AGF, on receipt of the allegation, he invited the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) and the Special Investigation Panel, the Head of Asset Recovery and Management Unit at the Office of the AGF to conduct forensic investigation into it.
The NFIU report indicated that the NPA did not maintain an account with the number quoted, just as the said amount was not found in any
NPA’S account.
Malami however said that the account which was closely related to the one quoted by Okpurhe John had a balance of $1,034,515, but subject of
litigation before the Federal High Court in Lagos in suit No. FHC/L/CS/882/10.
However, when LEADERSHIP called on Falana & Falana’s Chamber to react to AGF’s position, they stated that the AGF is yet to disclose the full detail of the matter.
