FCT Mobile Court Seals Hotel, Nightclub In Maitama

A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Mobile Court, presided over by Magistrate Idayat Akanni has sealed Missouri Hotel, located in Maitama district for allegedly operating a nightclub within curfew hours, in contravention of the COVID-19 regulations.

The court, sitting at the Eagles Square yesterday, also ordered that the hotel be sealed up for the period of one-week, even as it also tried and convicted 11 defaulters, who would be engaged in a three-day community service, after a fine of N5, 000 each.

LEADERSHIP gathered that six of the defaulters that were guilty of the offence,  were staff of the hotel while the remaining persons were those arrested within the hotel premises for partaking in social gathering, which according to the court, constituted night club activities.

Speaking with newsmen after the judgment, the prosecutor/chief state counsel to the FCT, Udeme Umanah explained that the 11 defaulters were tried, found guilty and sentenced accordingly.

Chairman of the FCT Ministerial TaskForce on COVID -19, Ikharo Attah, who led the team to enforce the seal up order, explained that the arrest and trial of the defaulters followed the receipt of complaints from residents of the area.

“The hotel has been sealed up pending when the court decides otherwise in the next one week, until then, the place will remain under lock and key. The action will serve as a deterrent to others, who run nightclubs, bars and restaurants to ensure that they actually obey the rules”.
