The Legal Awareness for Nigeria Women LAWN/ LEADS -Nigeria in partnership with Mac Arthur Foundation under its Strengthening Accountability and Transparency in Nigeria Education Sector (STATNES) has provided a two day training for 90 community monitors, CSOs and MDAs in local government financial reporting and prudence regulations.
The participants were drawn from Soba, Chikun and Kaura local government areas of Kaduna State and trained on how to monitor UBEC and other founded projects in their various local governments.
Speaking on the training, the Executive Director of LANW/LEADS -Nigeria, Mrs Rebecca Sako – John said, the essence of the training and the STATNES project is to improve accountability in the use of UBE funds and other projects managed by Kaduna State.
She said, it is also aimed at strengthening access to information on governance and administration of UBE funds and projects in Kaduna state and strengthen involvement of community groups and association in the monitoring of UBE funds and achievements in the state.
“It is also aimed at decreasing risks of leakages and corruption administrations and use of UBEC funds in Kaduna state and enhance inclusiveness and responsiveness of service providers”.
During the training, participants were taken through various presentations to include citizens participation in local government budget processes, community development charter and community score cards tolls for social accountability, the OCDs/EARS and EYES app as a means of feedback mechanism and the roles of community based monitors under the LFTAS structure, and importance of water sanitation and hygiene in preventing covid 19.
Some of the participants at the end of the training said, they are now more equipped via the training to further improved upon their monitoring skills of projects within their various communities.
Earlier in their goodwill messages, Mrs Mairo Suleiman from Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (KADSUBEB) and Mrs Linda Yahaya from the ministry of public works and infrastructure both commended the NGO for raising the consciousness of citizens in monitoring projects in their localities for transparency and accountability.
