The Nigerian military have described as baseless and unfounded, the allegation that troops in the Northeast Theatre of War are involved in illicit farming and fishing activities in Baga, Borno State.
Recall that Borno State governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, had alleged sabotage following an attack on his convoy in Baga about two weeks ago, accusing the military of involvement in illicit fishing and farming activities.
Addressing a press conference yesterday in Maiduguri, the deputy Theatre Commander Operation of Lafiya Dole, Maj. Gen. Felix Omoigui, who led an investigation team set up by the military to investigate the allegation described it as false.
“The allegation was conjured by overzealous personnel of security agencies who for personal glory, and without recourse to tenets of agency cooperation, decided to propagate the story and the governor believed this allegation given his recent utterances.
“Remarks of highly placed personalities is capable of demoralising the troops which negatively undermines the confidence of the locals in the military. Allegation of this nature could have been avoided if the military authority was contacted on issues concerning troops activities before going public.
“The realisation that the allegation emanated from personnel of security agencies could trigger reaction and animosity amongst troops. The investigative team recommended that the security agencies should endeavour to educate their personnel to verify an information before disseminating same.
“The governor would have been respectfully informed that the allegation was false. He should be informed of the need to contact the military headquarters regarding issues of this nature. Troops have been sensitized to be professional in line of duty,” he emphasized.
