The Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU) Youth Wing has commended Governor Nasir el-Rufai for setting up the House of Kaduna family peace initiative as part of measures to finding a lasting solution to the age long crisis in Southern Kaduna of Kaduna State.
According to youth wing of SOKAPU while addressing a press conference at the weekend, the Southern region of Kaduna State comprising of Jema’a, Jaba, Kagarko, Kachia, Sanga, Kaura, Kauru, Zangon Kataf, Lere, Kajuru and Chickun LGAs have been ravaged by the criminal activities for years now.
The National Youth leader Comrade Isaac John who read the text of the briefing, said, “estimates of the negative impacts of the barbaric attacks include approximately 900,000 people adversely affected, about 100,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), including over 10 internally displaced person camps (IDP) mostly in religious homes, over 700 deaths and even more people severely injured or missing, with hundreds of millions worth of farm produce destroyed”.
SOKAPU averred that many of the affected residents now live in IDP camps, with host families away from their original homes and in host communities, adding that many host communities are severely stressed, having to cater for the large influx of displaced people from places directly hit by the attacks.
It further posited that the attacks have also resulted in extensive damage to social, economic, health and market infrastructure with numerous homes, schools, hospitals, markets and places of worship destroyed or closed.
“Many communities have been completely abandoned, especially in parts of Chickun, Kajuru and Zangon kataf LGA’s. While there is still a semblance of economic and agricultural activities in some parts of the affected communities, the economy of most of such communities are at the verge of collapsed as farmers for the fear of attacks can no longer go to their farms.
“SOKAPU Youth wing commends the Peace Initiative of the government under the leadership of Governor Nasiru El-Rufia following the ”House Of Kaduna Family” peace initiative.
“We the Southern Kaduna Youths believe achieving peace and tranquillity in the region will require bringing an end to the killings, culprits identified and brought to book, effectively handling the humanitarian crisis and implementation of an effective reintegration and rebuilding programme.
“Effective reconstruction of social and physical infrastructures across the affected communities, provision of adequate security and conducive atmosphere for agricultural activities to thrive”.
SOKAPU Youth Wing also urged both the Federal and State Governments and its agencies such as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Kaduna state Ministry for Riots, Damages, Rehabilitations, and Resettlements to as a matter of urgency act fast in rebuilding ravaged communities and reintegrating families and persons displaced by this senseless acts of terror.
