The Imo State Association of the Deaf has cried out to Governor Hope
Uzodimma to urgently come to their rescue by addressing the challenges confronting the physically challenged persons in the state.
The chairman of the association, Uzoma Edwards who made the call
through his deputy, Aghaeri Etobi at a press conference in Owerri
alleged that the Special Education Centre within the Owerri
Municipal council had been relocated to the Orji Mechanic Village, in
the Owerri North council area without necessary facilities.
According to him, the School of the Dumb and the Deaf at Ofekata Orodo
in the Mbaitoli LGA had since been overtaken by weeds and reptiles
with no water, light, access roads, security and conveniences.
Etobi explained that the association suffered the worst neglect in
the defunct administrations of both ex-Governors Achike Udenwa and
Rochas Okorocha. He said that Okorocha later added salt to the injury when a portion of
land belonging to a Deaf/Special School in Orlu was ceded to the Roman
Catholic Church by the state government in the most dramatic manner.
He listed the challenges confronting these institutions scattered
across the three senatorial zones of the state to include lack of
security, unqualified teachers for the schools of Dumb and the Deaf,
un-conducive teaching and learning environment, poor feeding,
dilapidated structures as well as lack of vehicles to ease their
