An Ilorin Magistrates’ Court has remanded five persons at the Federal Prison Yard, Ilorin for allegedly belonging to a secret cult.
The accused were arraigned on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and being members of secret cult, contrary to Sections 97 of Penal Code Law and 14 of Secret Cult and Secret Society (Prohibition), Law of Kwara State.
The accused are Oloruntoyin Adam, Oluwanishola Yusuf, Ajisafe Faruq, Yusuf AbdulBashit and Lawal Mustapha.
They were arrested following a tip-off on October 4, 2018 at the Divisional Police Headquarters, Malete, Kwara State that some suspected members of secret cult were holding meeting at E Palace Hotels, Malete, Kwara State.
Based on the strength of the information, operatives of the police swung into action and stormed the said hotel where the accused were arrested while others absconded.
The Police First Information Report (FIR) stated that investigation conducted led to the recovery of one cutlass and some criminal charms from the accused.
The FIR added that further investigation conducted at the state Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department; Ilorin revealed that the accused are members of the dreaded Eiye secret cult confraternity.
The FIR stated that the accused were the notorious criminal elements disturbing the peace and tranquility of Malete and its environs, while the cutlass and the criminal charms recovered from them were part of the dangerous weapons used in carrying out their dastardly acts.
The prosecutor, Nasiru Yusuf, told the court that investigation into the case was still in progress while efforts are being made to arrest others now at large.
He urged the court to remand the accused in prison custody pending the outcome of investigation.
The defense counsel, Barrister Ahmad Basheerat, prayed the court to admit the accused to bail pending the outcome of investigation.
The magistrate, Mr MA Ibrahim, declined to take the plea of the accused for lack of jurisdiction to try the matter, but ordered that the accused be remanded at the Federal Prison Yard, Oke-Kura, Ilorin until the next adjourned date.
The case was adjourned till November 28 for further mention.
