2017 has gone but its thrills would be remembered for a long time as we begin 2018 in a great not. There was lots of controversies, “diss” and baby mama and papa’s saga in the industry while people also left their record label for greener pastures. ANTHONY ADA ABRAHAM with the help of popular opinion brings you the top six musical act of 2017 as a result of a random sampling.
There were tears and joy, and there was happiness and fulfilment in the Nigerian entertainment industry in 2017. The big international wins showed the world that 2018 would be bigger and better. These are the artistes who made it as Top 6 Musical Act of 2016.
Since he broke into international stage, Ayo Ibrahim Balogun aka Wizkid has been croozing more on the international stage. During the year in review, Wizkid bagged the highest number of international collaboration than any African artiste. The music star was able to deliver his first album, Sounds From The Other Side, under global music imprint Sony Music and the third of his career. His hit song ‘Come Closer’ has a RIAA Gold Certification in Canada and sold several thousands of units sold around Europe. Besides Davido, Wizkid is the the only artiste to garner 50 million views on a single video on YouTube, and to top that he’s easily the most popular Nigerian artist internationally. 2017 has been great for Wizkid and 2018 is sure going to be better.
The “Omo baba olowo,” crooner is certified the baddest guy in the game as far as 2017 in Nigeria is concern musically. The ‘Fia’ crooner kept the music industry on lock and put the keys in his pocket. From ‘If‘, to ‘Fall,’ ‘Fia’ and ‘Like’ Dat,’ Davido perfected the slogan ‘every single was a hit back to back’.
His singles were all ‘sing along’ tunes with very punchy and minimal lyrics and he delivered some of the biggest songs this year. His songs did not just rock in Nigeria alone, but crossed borders to the rest of Africa, Europe & America. Davido sure made $30billion in his account in 2017 and we are proud he ended the year on a good note with his reconciliation with Star boy Wizkid.
Since this petite lovely singer, Simisola Ogunleye known as Simi came into the industry, she has had hits back to back. She is not the usual artistes that make noise and act like in a nudist camp. She is a musician. She had her biggest outing in music in 2017. She was able to put out one of the best albums this year with lots of attraction considering she is an alternative music maker. Simi has one of the most popular songs this year ‘Joromi’.
Her self titled ‘Simisola’ was one of the most streamed album on iTunes World Music Chart and she again headlined her first sold out concert in November. 2018 is waiting for you Simi.
- Tiwa Savage:
Tiwa Savage proved doubters that she could come outbof controversy and do what she knows best. She is the reghning queen of Nigerian music. She knows where and what the public want and she give it to them as it’s hot. She was dishing us hits back to back featuring natable faces. Her debut song of the year ‘All Over’ is one of the most played songs on radio in the country, and one of the hottest AfroBeats anthems globally this year. Before we said Musa, she also dropped her ‘Sugar Cane’ EP with hits like ‘Ma Lo’. Tiwa is the only female Nigerian artiste with over 12 million views on a single video on YouTube this year. On the international front Tiwa Savage has been spotted with the likes of Diddy, Jay Z, DJ Khaled etc, and she has also graced international stages to perform. 2018 is already leveled for the mama Jamil.
The consistency of YBNL boss shows that talent can never be bought. Olamide after what seem like a difficult start for him finally settled into his own typical kind of music with the very viral hit ‘WO!!’ which anyone can relate to.
The Young Jonn crafted beat laced with street flows is a regular feature on Owambe playlist and a party banger. Olamide’s ‘WO’ is the most searched song in Nigeria this year, and he capped the year with his album, Lagos Nawa.
The Tinny Entertainment front man, Ycee, delivered his first body of work ‘The First Wave’ EP. One of the high points on that project was the stand out single ‘Juice’ produced by Adey and featuring Maleek Berry.
Juice was the only song that wrestled out Davido’s ‘IF’ to become the most played song in Naija at some point. Nigerians did not only drink the ‘Juice’ but passed the bug to UK and America. Notably Diddy played the song during his 48th birthday celebration. Ycee the game is yours. E-train believes you will slash more Juice in 2018.
