Abia State government has concluded arrangements to inaugurate its own Ebubeagu security outfit as resolved by the South East Governors’ Forum.
Governor Okezie Ikpeazu gave the indication at a meeting with the 17 local government council chairmen and some stakeholders in the security sector of the state at the Governor’s Lodge in Aba, the commercial hub of the state.
LEADERSHIP reports that the forum had at a meeting in Enugu the capital of Enugu State in April 2021 resolved to set up a vigilance group to be known as Ebubeagu in their respective states to check insecurity in the zone.
The latest development on the Ebubeagu security outfit was contained in a statement by the chief press secretary to the governor, Onyebuchi Ememanka that was made available to newsmen. The statement said the security outfit would operate at community, local government, and state levels.
According to the statement, Ikpeazu said that selected number of security personnel who will be in charge of the outfit at the all levels would also monitor the activities of criminal herders to avert herders and farmers clashes.
The governor said that leadership of each group of the personnel would be armed with relevant gadgets for prompt and effective communication and dissemination of information.
He emphasised the importance of security in the state as it is at the confluence of the South East and South-South zones with the possibility of criminal activities from the other states snowballing into it.
Responding, on behalf of others, the state chairman Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Hon Ibe Nwoke commended Ikpeazu for coming up with “a well-thought-out security measure for the state.”
