A High Court headed by Justice Fatimah Tafida has sentenced a 40-year-old man, Bangos Adamu, to death by hanging for killing his wife and child.
Justice Tafida held that the prosecution had proved his case beyond reasonable doubt that Adamu was guilty of the two-count charge preferred against him by the prosecution and convicted him for the offence.
The convict, from Janjaba village in Gombi local government area, was found guilty of killing his wife, Regina Bangos Adamu and her child, Revelation James, by hitting her (mother) with an axe on the head and hacking her child with a cutlass which led to their death.
Adamu told the court that whenever they had a misunderstanding, the deceased would complain and threaten to return to her former husband, and that her seven-year-old son used to support her decision to return to his father.
He said they were at home on June 15, 2021, when she asked him for grains to prepare food for them, and that he simply told her to go to the kitchen and get it.
Adamu said his wife refused to go to the kitchen and instead demanded that he should buy a loaf of bread for them to eat and leave the grains for the next day.
The convict said he refused to buy the bread and after that, she protested and told him that it is better for her to return to her former husband’s house.
According to Adamu, the deceased’s response provoked him and he began to nurse grudges against her and the child because of his support for the mother.
He told the court that when they retired to bed that fateful night, he woke up, armed himself with an axe and a cutlass and hit her three times on the head.
Adamu confessed that while she was struggling to give up her ghost, he used his cutlass and hacked the child to death, saying he fled the scene of the tragic incident and reported himself to the chairman of the Local Hunters’ Association who arrested him and handed him over to the police in Gombi local government area.
After listening to Adamu’s defence through his counsel, the judge found him guilty of the charges and sentenced to death by hanging.
