The wife of the president,Aisha Muhammadu Buhari will today, commission the first two breastfeeding rooms at the Gwadangaji Secretariat Birnin Kebbi as part of activities marking World Breastfeeding Week in Kebbi State.
This is even as the wife of the state governor, Dr Zainab Bagudu has solicitated support from traditional and religious leaders and all other stakeholders to join her in the drive to stop the prevalence of malnutrition and stunted growth among children in the state.
This was contained in a statement by the Special Assistant to the governor ,Hon Hayatudden Ahmed Bawa and made available to LEADERSHIP in Abuja,yesterday.
According to him, this is in line with the international recommendation to make work places more conducive for working mothers. It is also in line with the National Nutrition Campaign by the wife of the president, across the country.
The statement commended the state governor, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu for his unwavering support and encouragement to the nutrition campaign in the state.
The statement said the breastfeeding week also provides opportunity for initiating advocacy drive, mobilisation and support for extension of maternity leave from four to six months across the country.
“As such stakeholders such as UNICEF, Future Assured, Nigeria Association of Pediatric Nurses , Neonatal Society of Nigeria, civil society for nutrition will be present at the commissioning of the breastfeeding rooms.
He revealed that the level of exclusive breastfeeding in Nigeria is currently 17 per cent and 5million children are at risk of malnutrition each year due to this poor start.
