A pharmacist by profession, having graduated from the University of Jos, Kandi Pam Garba, an aspirant for the chairmanship of Jos South LGA talks about his reasons for vying for the seat and also why he rates the administration of Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State high. He spoke to Stanley Nkwocha recently in Jos.
What is your motivating factor for contesting the chairmanship of Jos South local government council?
First I will like you to know that contesting for chairmanship is a response to service and for me a personal sacrifice that, especially for my people who have called on me to come and serve them. For me it is also an opportunity for me to personally offer my selfless service to humanity, especially in bridging the gap between the very needy, voiceless, hapless but again very vital part of the teeming populace which we constitute. So, for me it is a generational shift thing which must be seen to reflect in
both impact and delivery.
Some say you are a new comer in politics, can you cause an upset or navigate your way through?
There is nothing like navigating your way through as the power domiciles with the electorate. Remember they said the same thing with the newly elected French President. In any case, I do not see myself as a new comer in politics because I have always participated in grassroots politics in Jos South and beyond. It may be my first time of contesting for a political position and if you insist then yes, WE not I alone are ready to cause an upset, an amazing one at that.
What about the local dynamics of zoning, does it favor Gyel, where you come from?
In Jos South we have a zoning arrangement that is strictly adhered to and by this arrangement is the turn of Gyel district. But for me those are not even the parameters for measurement. Competence, antecedents, manifesto, ability, teamwork, collectivity and above all the fear of God are all key factors very important and sacred to me.
Why do you opt for the APC?
APC is the party that gives everyone a fair playground, level playing field and good internal democratic structure, with respect for democratic values and principles.
Has the APC kept it’s promises at the national level?
Yes, as witnessed in the fight against corruption, curbing insurgency which has resulted in the gradual return of most chibok Girls among other developmental milestones. Even though in the middle of economic recession, I give credit to this government for managing to pull through and it’s only rife that we all join hands to build our nation.
What is your asessment of Governor Lalong’s administration so far?
So far so good, personally I rate him above 75 percent, considering the fact that all uncompleted projects from past government are being given attention, prompt payment of salaries and the huge peace we now enjoy on the Plateau which has laid the foundation for several frontiers of achievements. Governor Lalong is not a man akin to much noise, he is highly focused, detribalized and certainly setting the standards that those of us he inspires believe in. Little wonder you see the massive defections to the APC in Plateau State.
How would you help to build an enduring peace in Jos South if elected and Plateau State at large if elected especially with threats of disunity in the country?
Thanks for this question. I was thinking it would not come. First and foremost, let me follow suit with what our leader and governor of Plateau State, Governor Lalong has since said about threats of relocation. Let me emphatically state that every Nigerian has the right to life and freedom of movement. In this direction, I come against the quit notice given to Igbos indeed any other tribe to leave the North. We believe in peaceful coexistence and harmonious living and believe that just as is the case in every family as also reflected the agitation by the biafran sympathizers that dialogue must remain key and vital at all times in resolving whatever differences exist between and amongst us. This is key.
Peace has since been restored in Jos South and if elected, I will ensure the peace we now have is sustained by engaging our youths into gainful activities, , and most importantly ensure that the right of persons are respected by others. I will also set inter tribal and inter – religious working committees so as rekindle lost love and create easy and amicable ways of resolving issues than the hostile and volatile approach of resorting to self justice and reproach and taking laws into our own hands. We shall rebuild trust and confidence amongst all and ensure serene environment to enhance livelihood and high standards of living.
What should the people of Jos South look forward to in your administration?
Transparency, honesty, accountability and of course sporadic creation and enhancement of venue distributed projects that will positively affect my people and improve our collective wellbeing. We will also ensure expanded fora for increased revenue in a way that the poor man is not labored or brought into pain and of course boost our primary health care systems and educational system through quality policy that directly impact on the governance of the local government and state in general.
