Security authorities in Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State are currently on the trail of a suspected gay student of the institution for allegedly attempting to lure one of his school mates into homosexual practice, this newspaper has gathered.
The suspect, Daniel Enape Itsenegbemhe, 21, is a first year Higher National Diploma (HND-1) Civil engineering student of the institution. Sources in the school said the suspect has been making sexual advances to one male student who was newly admitted for the undergraduate studies in the school.
The authorities got to know of the issue through an unidentified student who reported the matter to the school authority. Investigation is ongoing on the issue.
“The school management reported the matter to us and since then, we have been investigating the issue. We must not allow these kinds of miscreants to fester in our society.” said the source who asked not to be named because he was not officially permitted to speak on the issue.
In Nigeria, gay marriage and displays of same-sex affection are banned.
According to police reports, over 40 men have been arrested across the country for performing homosexual acts.
Some Police operatives reportedly raided a hotel in Lagos State last weekend. Police said the hotel was cordoned off while the investigation was carried out before the search.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan had signed a legislative bill into law, making it illegal for gay people to hold meeting. The law also criminalizes homosexual clubs, associations and organizations.
