After a week of exciting basketball action at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Indoor Sports Complex in Kaduna, 12 teams have earned their places in the next round of the Zenith Bank Female Basketball Premier League slated for Asaba, Delta.
This was disclosed to newsmen by the head, technical committee, Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Ajibade Bello, at the end of the second phase of the league’s play-off which attracted 18 teams.
According to him, six teams would remain in the lower division – though he failed to disclose which teams gained promotion and which ones failed to do so – stressing that it would take some days for his committee to “compile an accurate table.”
Speaking further, Bello said the NBBF was looking forward to the third phase billed for Asaba in June.
“We are happy that the competition was very successful. The standard of play was high, officiating was very good and the spectators were well behaved. The venue was also great,” he expressed.
Bello hailed the improved sponsorship, while disclosing that the fourth phase would hold in in Ibadan, from where the top eight teams would head to Lagos for the final phase.
Coach of Kaduna’s GT 2000 Female Basketball Team, Simpson Morrison, expressed delight that his team qualified for the next stage of the league.
“It was fair for us this time; we played five games and won three. We are really stepping up. I am impressed with the outcome, because we were among the 12 teams that qualified,” he said
