..62 murders,177 armed robbery & 73 rape cases recorded in 2017
Worried by the increasing rates of armed robbery, violent killings and attacks in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, the Inspector General of Police (IGP),
Ibrahim Idris has approved the deployment of Two units of Special Rapid Respond Team to assist the State Police Command.
The deployment of the Special Teams by the Inspector General of Police also coincided with the decision by the State Police Command to partner with sister agencies of the Department of State Security (DSS) and the 16th Division of the Nigerian Army to confrony the rissing crimes,cult attacks and killings and armed robbery head on.
The Commissioner of Police in Bayels State, Mr. Amba Asuuo, while briefing newsmen I Yenagoa, said the comand has identified the major crimes in the state to be cultism,rape,arme robbery and unlawful possession of firearms due to proliferation of smal arms and light weapons.
According to Amba, the statistics of crime collated from January to December showed a worrisome trend with over 62 mursder cases, Rape and Indecent assault,73, Kidnapping,33, armed robbery,177 and unlawful possession of firwarms, 66 cases recorded.
Amba stated that though the Police have made over 623 arrests with 80 of the cases charged to court and over a hundred cases awaiting the Direction of Public prosecution approval.
He also announced and displayed over 64 dangerous weapons and firearms recovered from arrested suspects in the year under review with Four AK 47 riflesd, 11 Pump actions, 40 locally made pistols, Five locally made double barrel guns and three revolver pistol.
Police Commissioner Amba Asuquo said the State Police Command are up to the task and will sustain the frequent raid on blackspots that are used for drug dealings, ” In collabRatsssion with the state government, you see a re-energise policing and the people will sleep with their two eyes closed.”
