The Principal, Dialogue Girls College Kaduna, Mrs. Sakinat Nasir has expressed dismay over what she termed as negative influence of social media on students in Nigeria; saying there should be an enactment of a law that will prohibit underage children from using internet in order to control the menace.
She disclosed this at the 4thAnnual Speech and Prize Giving Day as well as the 2nd JSS 3 high school graduation ceremony of the College held in Kaduna yesterday.
According to her, the rate at which students visits internet pages like Facebook, instagram, Whattsapp and Snapchat is distracting attention from their study and this is affecting their academic performances negatively.
As a way to check it, she said Dialogue Girls College has made a law that barred students from coming to the school with handsets. Ipad and other gadgets.
Giving credence to this, the Sole Administrator of the college Mallam Dikko Shehu said the Board backed the management for the banning of the usage of such gadgets within the school. He added that internet facilities can have both positive and negative effects especially on students. He however, expressed dismay that students in Nigeria today are using internet facilities for negative purposes which has to be checked by all concern.
Speaking about the College which is the first Islamic Girls College in Kaduna, Mrs. Nasir said that the College which is in its Fourth year offers a combination of Islamic and Western education to produce the 21st Century women that will be morally build up and academically sound.
“The greatest challenge we encountered this school year was the influence of the social media. This saw most of our students being repeatedly distracted by several platforms such as instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and lots more.
“I must confess that the distractions and influences of these media are taking a toll on our daughters. I’ll like at this point to implore all parents to be on the alert s we don’t get unwanted surprises.
“Our great College this year added another feather to its cap when the proprietor of this College Dr. Mahadi Shehu in his magnitude offered the College Ciscso Computer Networking Academy (CCNA), we grabbing the offer as usual since we know at this point that you have come to trust us and incorporate it into the programm
“This saw our Senior Secondary 1 students attending school on Saturday. The students have completed the first section of the training and today we present them with their certificates.
Our Junior Secondary School 3 students successfully completed the programm set aside for them and we appreciate all parents who were patient with us all through. I can confidently narrate to you today that this set of graduating students completed; The NECO syllabus for JSS 3 and have certificates today, the students assessment tests for key stage 3, the basic certificate in Information Technology and Freedom from the basic stage of Tailoring and Fashion Designer,” she you.
A stakeholder, Mrs. Azeezat Yusuf Mohammed, commended management of Dialogue Girls College for the new approach to girl-child education; saying every staff in the school are all females which enable the girls to feel free and discuss every problems bordering them.
As the mother of the best overall students in Junior Secondary School 3 Mrs. Mohammed expressed delight on the performance of her daughter and classmates. She advised parents to take the girl-child education serious because when you educate a boy, you educate an individual but when you educate a girl, you educate the whole nation.
