Opposing recent rumours of an alleged coup plot by the military in the country, Borno State governor , Alhaji Kashim Shettima has said such a plot can never succeed in Nigeria.
He emphatically stressed that there can never be a coup plot in the country and that the country can never return to the dark age.
The governor stated this during the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Profoturo Foundation, a global charity organisation, the Northern Governors Forum (NGF) and the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), in Abuja, yesterday.
LEADERSHIP Weekend reports that the initiative seeks to provide free quality primary education, values and life skills to vulnerable children in Northern Nigeria using new and affordable technology.
Shettima, who is also also the chairman, Nothern Governors Forum (NGF) said that Boko Haram insurgents has been degraded, adding that all efforts is geared towards totally defeating the sect. He noted that all hands is currently on deck to defeat the Boko Haram insurgents completely.
He also disclosed that the number of out of school children is on the rise, saying that the current number of out of school children is 14 million.
“This MoU will go a long a way in rekindling hope for over 14 million children and youth in northern Nigeria who are aimlessly walking the streets without hope of better tomorrow. So we whole heartedly welcome this development which will foster inter communal understanding.
“It is a welcome development and we see this as right step in the right direction to change our society to a better place, education is absolutely fundamental to repositioning the northern part of Nigeria.
“We have made a lot of gains against insurgency in the country but a lot still needs to be done,” the governor said.
Lauding the efforts of the Nigerian Army so far, the governor urged them to keep the morale high.
“We have to give it to this government that they have done marvelously well in containing insurgency, but they have not been totally defeated anybody who told you so is economical with truth. But they have been degraded to such a level that they are no longer a threat to the corporate existence of this country.
“It is a work in progress, the commoners in the north are ever willing to corporate with relevant government agencies in returning peace and development to the country, because there can not be development without peace.
“There will never be a coup in this contry, we can not return to dark age, military coup my foot,” he said.
In his address, the representatives of the European Union and Nigeria Community, Prof. Jan de Volder noted that Profuturo is fully committed to the success of the project.
Also, the managing director, Profuturo Foundation, Mz Sofia Fernandez de Mesa noted that in compliance with Spanish laws, the foundation has agreed to work with the Norther Governors and Kukah Foundation.
