Residents of Umuebulu Community in Etche local government area of Rivers State, have fled their homes following the killing of a former youth leader in the community, Godwin Njoku, popularly known as Biggy by unknown gunmen.
LEADERSHIP gathered that on hearing about Njoku’s murder, his loyalists, who are mostly youths and armed with dangerous weapons, took to the streets of the community destroying property and injuring people.
It was further gathered that the death of the youth leader may not unconnected with his activities while serving as youth leader in the community.
A source in the community, who pleased for anonymity told LEADERSHIP that the late Biggy was involved in the unlawful sale of lands, especially lands belonging to Okrika community resident in Umuebule.
According to the source, the deceased was also involved in the sale of my land belonging to Camp David in Umuebule which generated disaffection and division in the community.
Efforts to get the reaction of the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Nnamdi Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) proved abortive as he neither responded to WhatsApp and text messages sent to him, no returned calls.
However, a senior Police Officer, who pleaded for anonymity, said the Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mukan, had already ordered the deployment of policemen to the community to restore calm.
